Our History

The Pima County/Tucson Women’s Commission was founded to give women a stronger voice in our community and government. Established by City of Tucson Ordinance 4416 on December 8, 1975 - in celebration of International Women’s Year and also Tucson’s Bicentennial Anniversary - the organization as the Tucson Women’s Commission.
On March 17, 1992 the Pima County Board of Supervisors expanded the Commission’s reach to serve the entire county, officially becoming the Pima County/Tucson Women’s Commission. The same year, we incorporated as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, strengthening our ability to advocate for and serve women and girls.
For more than 30 years, the Commission thrived as a voice for equity and equality. In the wake of a nationwide fiscal crisis, we faced significant challenges – but in 2010, a dedicated group of Tucson’s leading feminists and activists stepped forward to revitalize the Commission and reimagine how we would serve our mission.
Once again, we found ourselves tested during the COVID -19 pandemic, but our commissioners continue to work tirelessly to restore our place as a leading advocate for women’s rights, representation, and opportunity in Pima County and the City of Tucson.
